In recent years, page rank has come down to back links. The more sites that link to you – the higher your page rank. But there are some definite qualifiers that need to be mentioned in regards to that statement.

Reciprocal linking is now deemed to be a waste of time because search engines want “one way links” where there is no connection between the website receiving the back link and the one giving it.

The quality of the website giving the link to any site also needs to be of some quality. There needs to be relevant text on the site. It should not be a site with just a bunch of links nor should it be part of a link farm.

Poor quality links will not cause you any harm as long as the techniques of the links are “white hat”. That said, you should concentrate on higher quality websites that have original content.

There is no greater quality link than a contextual link that is anchored with a keyword. In other words, if you were to buy a link on this website for pet supplies, it would not do you much good. I wouldn’t sell it to you anyway because it doesn’t fit the content.

So if you were going to buy a contextual link on this website, the best link would be one that is anchored with a keyword and surrounded by text.

Of course, buying one link on this site is not going to make a big dent in your link building endeavors. It would just be a small part in a larger process of building links from many sites.

DO’S AND DON’T'S OF LINK BUILDING!

Do not buy links from a company that places links automatically using software. You should seek out manual placement of links so you know what you are getting. The latter method also ensure you link is there forever – even if you stop paying for a company to place links for you.

Stay away from link farms and gateway pages that only exist to point to other websites. Don’t waste a lot of time with reciprocal links. A few relevant partner will not hurt you as long as the sites you are linking too are of good quality.

There are a couple of schools of thought when hiring a link building service. Some say as long as the methods are “white hat” it’s ok to spend, let’s say around $300 per month, to have the link building service place your anchored text on 80 websites per month. (this is about the going rate based on my research).

Others would say to spend the same $300 with a company that places your contextual links on only 20 sites per month, but that those 20 sites per month will do a better job over the long run. Actually, in discussion with a few companies I’ve learned that you really need to spend about $500 a month minimum to be effective, so it does cost more for quality link building.

The thinking in the first example is that when spending less for a mass amount of links, many links will not be of high quality but over time you’ll get enough link juice to improve your page rank. (Remember, even the poor quality links need to be “white hat”. No “black hat” techniques, no link farms… etc).

I am not an expert on link building. A lot of the articles on this site talk about Banner Advertising. While a banner ad does act as a link, but the purpose of banner ads are to get relevant clicks from potential buyers to your site. The fact that there is a link for the search engines as well is a bonus, but not the goal is direct traffic from real people to your site.
